An allergic reaction to potatoes can cause an itchy nose that leads to sneezing. During an allergic reaction, the body produces higher levels of histamine, according to MedlinePlus. Histamine is a chemical in the body that helps defend it from harmful substances, but also causes inflammation in soft tissue. Histamine produced in the sinuses as a result of a potato allergy will cause nasal congestion, a runny nose, sneezing and an itch. AllergiesExplained.com says a potato allergy is uncommon and needs to be diagnosed by a medical doctor.

Effects

A food allergy is caused by an overreaction of the immune system to certain proteins found in potatoes. When you eat a potato, your immune system reacts as if it's under attack and begins to defend itself by creating antibodies that attempt to ward off the potato proteins and trigger mast cells to begin producing higher levels of histamine. Much like seasonal allergies, the histamine in the sinuses causes irritation and inflammation in nasal passages.

Common Nasal Symptoms

Nasal symptoms from a food allergy include nasal congestion; sneezing; runny nose; itching in the nose, eyes and throat; post-nasal drip; and sinus pressure, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC. Inflammation in the sinuses, or sinusitis, causes the swollen sinuses to place excessive pressure on the surrounding area, leading to sinus headaches. Sinus pressure is commonly felt in the eyes, cheeks, upper teeth and in the forehead.

Other Potato Allergy Symptoms

If the itchy nose and sneezing are the result of an allergy, you may experience other symptoms commonly related to a food allergy, including skin rashes, gastrointestinal problems and asthma. Skin rashes from a potato allergy include general inflammation and skin itching, atopic dermatitis and hives. You may experience stomach discomfort, diarrhea and vomiting. Asthma symptoms that can develop include chest tightness, difficulty breathing and wheezing.

Treatment

The most effective treatment for a potato allergy is to avoid eating potatoes or products containing potato by-products, according to MayoClinic.com. Reduce nasal itching by taking an over-the-counter antihistamine. Antihistamines block mast cells in the sinuses from producing histamine.

Consideration

Although rare, an allergy to potatoes may cause a severe allergic reaction called anaphylactic shock. If you experience shortness of breath, swelling in the throat or mouth, hives or a sudden drop in blood pressure, call 911 for emergency care. An injection of epinephrine may be required.
