1. Eliminate Your Pain
Fioricet is a drug that treats complex tension headaches. Some people use Fioricet to treat migraines. Fioricet contains butalbital, acetaminophen and caffeine. Butalbital is a barbiturate that relaxes you as it slows down your central nervous system. Acetaminophen is a pain reducer and the caffeine helps to constrict blood vessels in the head that are thought to cause head pain when they dilate.
2. Watch Out for Side Effects
The most common side effects of Fioricet stem from the barbiturate in the drug. Drowsiness, dizziness, light-headedness, constipation, stomach pain, muscle weakness, nausea and vomiting are some possible side effects that can occur when you take Fioricet. Some people report feeling intoxicated when using this drug. If you feel short of breath, have any swelling in your mouth, your throat feels like it's closing or if you have a rash, stop taking Fioricet and get emergency medical help immediately. An allergic reaction to Fioricet is possible, and can be life threatening.
3. Beware of Drug Interactions
Never mix other sedatives, tranquilizers or alcohol with Fioricet. These drugs intensify the effect of the barbiturate slowing your central nervous system. Your central nervous system controls your breathing and heart beating. It's very dangerous to slow things down too much. Also, avoid taking any over-the- counter medications that contain acetaminophen. Too much acetaminophen can permanently damage your liver.
4. Watch Out for Dependence, Abuse and Addiction
If you notice your regular amount of Fioricet suddenly isn't taking care of your headache as well, you may have developed drug dependence. Fioricet has high abuse potential and is a very addictive drug, because of the barbiturate it contains. Never take more than what your doctor prescribes to you. If Fioricet isn't managing your pain, your doctor might try something different. If you have been abusing Fioricet or believe you are addicted to it, get professional help immediately. Withdrawals can be dangerous and are uncomfortable at best. It's also important to get psychiatric help for the issues that brought you to the addiction in the first place.
5. Observe General Drug Warnings
It's very likely you'll feel drowsy or dizzy while taking Fioricet. For this reason, it's best to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery when taking this drug. Do not take Fioricet when you're pregnant. Fioricet does pass through breast milk and should therefore be avoided while nursing.
