According to Real Simple magazine, curly hair becomes frizzy when it is too dry and absorbs moisture from the air. This swells the hair shaft and makes the hair big, puffy and untamed. Your hair doesn't have to be naturally curly for it to become frizzy. It can also become frizzy due to perms, coloring or heated appliances. Fortunately, there are several strategies that you can try when washing, conditioning and styling your hair to prevent and tame frizzy, curly hair.

Step 1

Wash your hair with shampoo specifically formulated for frizzy, curly hair. To avoid drying out your hair, wash your hair as infrequently as possible.

Step 2

Condition your hair with a conditioner formulated to moisturize dry, damaged and frizzy hair after every shampoo. Allure magazine recommends leaving the conditioner in your hair for at least five minutes before rinsing it out. Do not rub or twist your hair when drying it, as this can cause damage and more frizz.

Step 3

Apply a deep conditioning treatment once per week. According to Real Simple magazine, oil and cream treatments prevent hair from absorbing more moisture.

Step 4

Protect your hair against heat. Blow-dryers and flat irons dry out your hair, causing more frizz. Allow your hair to air dry as often as possible. If you must use hot appliances on your hair, first apply a product formulated to protect hair from heat damage.

Step 5

Style your hair with products that use silicone or oil to smooth the hair and block moisture. These protective serums prevent your hair from absorbing all of the moisture in the air. Apply the product to the palms of your hands and gently pat the surface of your hair without crushing the shape of your hairstyle.

Tips and Warnings

  • For severely damaged hair, leave the conditioning treatment in overnight. Put a towel on your pillow to protect it from the product. A good haircut prevents many problems for people with frizzy, curly hair. Real Simple magazine recommends that you ask your stylist for a blunt cut done with scissors -- not a razor, which thins out your hair, causing more frizz. Alcohol can dry hair out, causing frizz. Avoid styling products that have alcohol.
  • If your hair suddenly becomes excessively dry or frizzy, call your doctor to rule out an underlying medical condition.
