Instructions for Sewing a Yoga Bolster

A yoga bolster is a specially designed pillow to aid during the yoga work out. A yoga bolster can be square or round. It is filled with cotton and comes in a variety of sizes. The yoga bolsters available for purchase offer limited fabrics and patterns to choose from. Making your own yoga bolster can provide you with more options to take to your next yoga class. A common bolster finished size is 27 inches by 9 inch diameter. Only one afternoon is required to make a custom bolster.

Make the Pillow Form

Lay the muslin on the table and cut a rectangle 28 inches wide x 10 inches long.

Step 4

Sew the long edge of the muslin tube using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Leave a 4-inch opening near the center for turning.

Step 5

Pin one circle to each end of the tube. Stitch the end pieces to the tube.

Step 6

Trim and clip curves. Turn.

Step 7

Stuff with cotton until smooth and firm.

Tips and Warnings

  • Using fillings other than 100 percent cotton will shorten the life of a yoga bolster. If you prefer a different size bolster, simply replace the measurements in these instructions with your own and proceed with the directions.
  • Work slowly when sewing the end pieces to ensure that the circle fits on the tube without puckers.
