Metformin is an oral medication commonly prescribed to manage diabetes, according to "Mayo Clinic Essential Diabetes Book." If you are diabetic and trying to lose weight while taking Metformin, you should restrict your sugar intake in addition to your calories, suggests "Foundations of Nursing." Learning how to eat a special diet to lose weight and manage your blood glucose levels can be challenging, but with some practice and patience, it is a skill that you can successfully master.
Step 1
Eat six small meals, as opposed to three large ones, throughout the day. According to "Contemporary Nutrition," eating multiple small meals throughout the day assists your body in maintaining an even blood glucose level, allowing for the optimum effectiveness of the Metformin.
Step 2
Incorporate at least one serving of non-starchy vegetables, such as lettuce, broccoli or bell peppers, with each meal. These vegetables are low in calories and high in fiber, allowing you to feel full and stick to a reduced calorie diet.
Step 3
Eat a serving of lean protein at each meal, such as white meat poultry, lean red meat, fish, shrimp, egg whites or soy. Lean protein is fairly low in calories, averaging only 30 calories per ounce, according to "Contemporary Nutrition," and breaks down slowly in the body, thereby keeping your hunger at bay.
Step 4
Avoid sugary foods such as candy and pastries. According to "Foundations of Nursing," these sorts of foods will cause a rapid spike in your blood sugar and will cause the Metformin to be the least effective.
