Avocados are mild-tasting fruits that grow well in Florida, California and Hawaii. You can purchase the smaller, pebbly-skinned Florida avocados or the larger, glossy California avocados at most grocery stores year-round.
Calories and Fat
According to Calorie King, a whole medium-sized avocado contains about 322 calories and nearly 30 g of fat. A serving size is about one-fifth of a medium avocado, according to the California Avocado Commission; one serving would contain just over 50 calories and approximately 6 g of fat.
Benefits
Avocados contain fiber, potassium, B vitamins and vitamin E. They also prime your body to absorb fat-soluble nutrients, including lutein and beta carotene, when eaten at the same time. Although avocados contain a lot of monounsaturated fat, they are low in saturated fat and contain no trans fat or cholesterol.
Uses
Use avocados in guacamole by mixing with minced garlic, cilantro and red pepper flakes. Mash and spread avocado on sandwiches, or cube and add to salads. You can even puree avocado and feed it to your baby, who may enjoy its mild, smooth taste.
