Prenatal vitamins area available by prescription or over-the counter. There are numerous types from which to choose -- organic, chewable, liquid, even Kosher prenatal vitamins are available. Prenatalgyn
Prenatalgyn is a prenatal vitamin formulation sold over-the-counter. Folic acid is vital to a healthy pregnancy. The March of Dimes suggest that women take folic acid even before becoming pregnant to help reduce the chance of birth defects. Prenatalgyn contains 800 mcg of folic acid. The formulation contains 22 additional vitamins and minerals, including 1,300 of calcium, 20 mg of vitamin B6, 200 mcg of chromium and 50 mg of docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid. In his book, "Eat Right For Your Baby," Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo writes that DHA helps ensure a healthy central nervous system for your baby, as well as a healthy birth weight.
Trimedisyn
Like Prenatalgyn, Trimedisyn is also available for over-the-counter purchase. The recommended daily dose of Trimedisyn contains 800 mcg of folic acid, 1,000 mg of calcium, 240 mg of vitamin C, 20 mg of vitamin B6 and 18 mcg of vitamin B12. Trimedisyn also contains vitamins D3, E, B1, B2, biotin, iodine, magnesium, zinc, selenium and herbal components such as ginger. Trimedisyn is a probiotic blend. It contains live cultures of the bacteria typically found in the human digestive system.
Prenatal Plus DHA
Liquid vitamins, such as Buried Treasure's Prenatal Plus DHA, are absorbed more quickly than tablets. But pregnant women experiencing nausea may prefer a chewable pill. A 2 tbsp. serving of Prenatal Plus contains 200 mg of DHA, 800 mcg of folic acid, and many of the same vitamins contain in Trimedisyn and Prenatalgyn. Prenatal Plus also incorporates 10 mg of para-aminobenzoic acid, or PABA, 50 mcg of Selenium, 120 mg of red raspberry leaf and 30 mg of chamomile flower.
