Anyone that has ever gone to college will have likely heard of the "freshman 15." This term is used to describe the weight gain you are likely to experience when going away to school. Some potential reasons for college weight gain include decrease in physical activity, poor eating in resident dining halls and skipping breakfast. You will have to change your habits if you want to lose weight in college.
Step 1
Add physical activity to your daily routine to lose weight in college. Bike or walk to classes and take the stairs instead of using the elevator. If you do drive to class, park as far away as possible in the parking lot.
Step 2
Snack on low-fat and nutritious items. Avoid vending machines, since they are usually filled with high-fat chips and candies. If you have a dorm fridge, keep low-fat yogurt, cut-up veggies and fruit on hand for snacks.
Step 3
Watch what you order when eating fast food or take out. College can be a very social time and you may feel peer pressured to go in on a pizza, fast food or Chinese take out. Order the healthier menu options like veggie slices of pizza, garden salads with low-fat or non-fat dressing or steamed veggies and rice.
Step 4
Prepare low-calorie meals in your microwave. You can prepare diet frozen-food entrees or steam together veggies and brown rice.
Step 5
Join a fitness club. Many colleges have fitness clubs and facilities on campus. The use of these facilities may be free or at a low rate. If you want to lose weight in college, buddy up with someone and try to go to workout 30 to 60 minutes per day.
