Cellulite is lumpy skin that appears most frequently on the thighs, hips and buttocks of women, according to the Mayo Clinic. It is caused by a honeycomb-shaped layer of connective tissue that attaches the skin to the muscles in the body. If the connective tissue is stretching over a thick layer of fat, it will cause the fat to stretch through the connective tissue, giving the skin and underlying fat the appearance of cottage cheese. Cellulite can be removed with exercise, weight loss or laser treatments.
Step 1
Lose weight. The Mayo Clinic confirms that weight loss can help reduce the appearance of cellulite. The larger the layer of fat that is stretching between the connective tissue and the muscles of the body, the more noticeable cellulite will be. Avoid foods that contain saturated fat and trans fats, and start a regular exercise routine to lose body fat, which will reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Step 2
Increase your cardio workout. Celebrity fitness trainer Gunnar Peterson suggests reducing cellulite by doing a daily cardio routine, consisting of lunges and squats while holding hand weights. Sign up for a cardio class at the gym--regular sessions may melt cellulite away.
Step 3
Get laser therapy. There are several types of laser therapy, including Triactive, an infrared heat system; Verasmooth, a massage and laser combination system; and diode laser energy. The Mayo Clinic suggests that some laser treatments can last up to six months, although they are a pricier option than regular exercise and healthy eating, which can get rid of cellulite for good.
Step 4
Avoid creams and miracle cures. There is not enough proof to determine that any creams or gels on the market claiming to get rid of cellulite actually work, according to the Mayo Clinic. These creams may make your skin look smoother, but will most likely do nothing about the dimpled look on your thighs and buttocks.
Step 5
Don't be tempted by liposuction. Liposuction is an effective way of removing excess fat, but it is not an effective way of losing cellulite, the Mayo Clinic warns. In fact, it may even make cellulite look worse.
Tips and Warnings
- Vigorous massage may improve the appearance of cellulite temporarily.
- Consult your doctor to determine the right cellulite treatment for you.
