Dark circles under the eyes are often the inevitable result of aging in men. As you get older, your skin thins out and loses the elastic substance collagen from beneath the surface. Skin looks less plump and can darken under the eyes. However, several lifestyle factors contribute to dark circles. A few changes to your normal behavior and some simple tricks might help you reduce the dark circles.

Lifestyle

Step 1

Go to bed early. Sleeping and rest help combat dark eye circles in men. Aim for around 8 hours of sleep per night.

Step 2

Stay out of the sun. Apply suncream to your face, including under your eyes. Sunlight can prematurely age your skin.

Step 3

Drink lots of water. Dehydrated skin looks more tired and dry. Men need drink 13 cups of water per day, according to advice from the East Carolina University Department of Family Medicine.

Step 4

Quit smoking and reduce your intake of alcohol and decaffeinated drinks. Doing all three can dehydrate and age your skin, triggering dark circles under the eyes.

Home Remedies

Step 1

Apply an under-eye skin cream. Two main types exist, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The first constricts blood vessels, preventing the collection of fluid under the eyes. The other adds a see-through layer to the skin. Ask your pharmacist for the right cream.

Step 2

Use anti-allergy drugs if you have any puffiness due to an allergic reaction. Sometimes dark circles are the result of such a reaction.

Step 3

Rinse your nostrils with salt solution if you have a blocked nose. A blocked sinus can mean darker circles, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Step 4

Buy specialist skin lotions containing either alphahydroxy acids or vitamins C and K, according to Dr. John A. Persing from the Yale University School of Medicine in an interview for the "New York Times." Both substances can help make the skin look plumper.

Step 5

Cut a large potato into thin slices. Place a slice on each eye and leave it on for several minutes. The potato contains an enzyme which helps to lighten your dark circles, according to Menscience.

Tips and Warnings

  • Experiment with different treatments until you find the one that works for your eyes. Try unperfumed foundation makeup if you're very worried about your dark circles. A good foundation may be used without being easily detected.
  • Avoid putting any abrasive liquids on your skin. Speak to your doctor if your eyelids are inflamed, red or very sore.
