Ponce de Leon searched for the fountain of youth. Many modern women would settle for a perfect cellulite treatment. Greek Island Labs, the company that manufactures Adonia LegTone Serum, claims that its product will create a 47 percent smoother leg appearance in nine minutes and a 72 percent reduction in the appearance of cellulite within six weeks.

Identification

The word "cellulite" describes the compartmentalized fat that creates a dimpled, orange-peel appearance of skin on the thighs, buttocks and abdomen. It forms when fat and fluids accumulate in the connective tissue and create small, pocketed protrusions of fat. While the exact causes of cellulite are still unclear, Adonia manufacturers state that cellulite forms when the skin's stem cells become weak, causing fat cells to accumulate and engorge the skin's surface.

Function

Based on its theory of what causes cellulite, Greek Island Labs designed the Adonia LegTone Serum to reactivate dormant skin stem cells. Some of its ingredients, such as organic grapefruit oil, contain vitamin C, an antioxidant that fights skin-damaging free radicals. Other ingredients include organic ginger oil, which supposedly has anti-inflammatory properties, and rosemary verbenone oil, which allegedly stimulates cell renewal.

Features

Greek Island Labs bases its Adonia LegTone Serum cellulite treatment on a type of herbal medicine called gemmotherapy, which uses the buds and young shoots of trees and shrubs to stimulate elimination of toxins from the body. The serum contains organic plant stem cells, as well as 23 other oils.

Expert Insight

While Greek Island Labs put its product through clinical trials, medical experts such as Dr. Gary Moss, head of pharmaceutics at the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom, are not impressed. In an interview featured on Mail Online, he describes the theories behind this cellulite treatment as "pseudo-science." And in an article on its own website, the American Council on Exercise notes that creams cannot penetrate the skin's surface and rearrange the fat cells.

Prevention/Solution

A 60-day supply of Adonia LegTone serum costs $79 as of 2010. Since cellulite is not a medical condition, the cream may improve your appearance, but it will not improve your overall health. Investing the money in a gym membership and/or personal trainer will improve your appearance and your health, even if it fails to completely eliminate cellulite. Wayne Westcott, Ph.D., research director at the South Shore YMCA in Quincy, Mass., and author of "No More Cellulite," says a program that includes weight training and aerobic exercise is a better solution.
