Acid reflux occurs when partially digested food and stomach acids seep back up the esophagus, often burning its lining and causing pain. Acid reflux is not always painful and may present with other symptoms of indigestion, such as bloating, belching, coughing and flatulence. A variety of natural remedies, supplements and foods may be helpful in preventing and controlling your reflux. Pain in the stomach and chest may indicate other conditions besides acid reflux. Report chest pain to your health practitioner.
Baking Soda
Baking soda neutralizes stomach acids instantly because it is highly alkaline, according to Drugs.com. If you need something to stop painful acid reflux immediately, mix 1/2 tsp. baking soda in a glass with 6 to 8 oz. water and drink it all. You can drink a glass of baking soda several times a day if necessary, up to a total of 3 tsp. baking soda daily. Baking soda can raise the blood pressure, so do not use it if you take medicine for hypertension without first consulting your health practitioner.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Another natural supplement that helps control acid reflux is apple cider vinegar, says Dr. Theodore Baroody in "Alkalize or Die." The vinegar helps neutralize stomach acids by triggering the pancreas to release digestive juices including bicarbonate. In addition, apple cider vinegar helps create an alkaline-forming environment in your system, helping to control acidosis and acid reflux. Mix 1 to 2 tbsp. vinegar in a glass with 6 to 8 oz. water and drink to prevent reflux. If the vinegar is too strong for you, reduce the amount until you can tolerate it and work up to the full amount over time.
Raw Honey
In her book, "The Acid Alkaline Balance," Felicia Drury Kliment recommends using raw honey to control acid reflux because of its enzymatic action. Raw honey with all of its components included, is practically a perfect food, says Kliment. Its high amylase properties allow it to help digest starches and support the pancreas in its production of pancreatic enzymes. The best honey has been processed as little as possible, says Kliment, and should have its original nutrients remaining, including royal jelly, propolis and pollen. Take a spoonful at bedtime to prevent nighttime acid reflux attacks, or use it throughout the day to stop the burning pain from acid reflux. Do not give honey in any form to children younger than 1 due to the possible presence of botulism toxins.
