You burn calories at different rates, depending on your weight, during all your daily activities. You even burn calories just watching television or sitting reading. If you want to lose weight, focus on activities that burn the most calories.
Sitting Reading or Watching TV
Watching TV or sitting down reading a book will still burn off calories. The important factor is the rate of calorie loss. Watching TV for 30 minutes will burn off only 28 calories for a 155-pound person, Harvard Medical School calculates. Sitting reading a book, for a person of the same weight, burns off 50 calories every 30 minutes.
Cooking
If you weigh 155 lbs. and spend half an hour cooking, you'll burn 93 calories. If you weigh 185 lbs. and cook for the same period of time, you'll burn 111 calories. You also burn calories when you go food shopping. With a cart, a 185-lb. person burns 155 calories every 30 minutes, or 310 calories an hour, Harvard reports.
Cleaning
Washing the car or cleaning the windows are other good activities for burning off calories on a daily basis. If you weigh 155 lbs., you'll burn 167 calories every 30 minutes doing these. If you weigh 185 lbs., you'll burn 200 calories over the same time period, Harvard calculates.
