You don't need to work out on a daily basis to burn calories. Whether it's cooking, cleaning or spending time with your kids -- you burn calories through everything you do in the course of a day. To lose weight, however, you need to burn off more calories than you consume.
Watching TV
If you sit watching TV or reading a book, you still manage to burn off a small number of calories. If you weigh 155 lbs., you will burn 56 calories for every hour of TV watched, according to the Harvard Medical School.
Cleaning
Heavy cleaning such as washing the car or cleaning the windows burns calories at the same rate per 30 minutes as badminton and at a higher rate than volleyball. If you weigh 155 lbs,. you will burn 167 every 30 minutes. If you weigh 185 lbs., you'll burn 200.
Playing With Kids
If you weigh 155 lbs., a 30-minute session of moderate play with your kids will help you burn 149 calories. If you weigh 185, you'll burn 178. This is the equivalent over the same time period of horse riding or volleyball. With a starting weight of 185, a half-hour session of vigorous play with your kids will help you burn off 222 calories.
