The growing Mexican population in the U.S. has led to an increase in authentic Mexican restaurants and increased the American taste for the foods, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. By avoiding dishes high in fat, you can find healthy options on an authentic Mexican menu.

Nutrient-dense food provides fewer calories that fill you up quicker and are longer lasting than weaker food options. According to the Clemson University Extension, you'll also get more nutrition per calories in nutrient-dense foods, such as beans, corn and flour tortillas and guava, papaya and salsa.

Authentic Mexican dishes rely heavily on beans that are nutrient-dense and low in fat and calories. Only 227 calories are in 1 cup of black beans and 237 calories in 1 cup of refried beans.

Considerations

Other Mexican foods that can provide effective diet foods that also taste good and can spice up a menu include a 6-inch flour tortilla with melted cheese for only 100 calories and eight baked tortilla chips with 3 tbsp. salsa for only 86 calories.
