Developing hives from fish liver oil is not normal. If you develop hives after ingesting fish liver oil, you should call your doctor and discontinue use. Hives from fish liver oil may be sign of an allergic reaction. If you have a known allergy to fish or soy, it is not recommended that you use fish liver oil. Fish liver oil is commonly used to increase omega-3's in your body, but can be harmful if you are allergic to the supplement.

Allergic Reaction to Fish Liver Oil

Fish liver oil supplements do not contain fish proteins, but may contain traces of the proteins and is therefore not recommended for people with a general fish allergy, according to MedlinePlus. If you experience an allergic reaction to fish liver oil, your immune system will begin to attack the supplement with IgE antibodies, that are commonly created in the body to ward off viruses and bacteria. Increased IgE antibodies in the blood stream cause mast cells in the body to produce histamine to help ward off the substance.

Hives

Histamine in the skin can cause various rashes to develop; commonly hives. Hives are raised, inflamed welts found throughout the body. They are extremely itchy and can migrate from one area of the body to another. The most commonly places hives develop are the face, hands and legs. The rash appears to be red, flat on top and has defined borders, but can develop in various shapes and sizes, according to MayoClinic.com. Hives may also be a sign of anaphylactic shock, a severe allergic reaction that could lead to death.

Other Symptoms

If you experience an allergic reaction after taking fish liver oil, you will develop other symptoms alongside hives. Other symptoms related to fish liver oil allergy are swelling of the lips, tongue, throat or face, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, wheezing, trouble breathing, nasal congestion and tingling in the mouth. You may also experience an asthma attack or develop eczema of general skin inflammation or itching.

Treatment

The most effective approach to treating hives from fish liver oil is to discontinue using the supplement, call your doctor and take an over-the-counter antihistamine, according to MayoClinic.com. An antihistamine will block the body's ability to create histamine, resulting in a reduction of skin inflammation and the hives. Topical hydrocortisone or prescribed corticosteroid lotions may be used to reduce the itch and inflammation.

Warning

Hives may be the first sign of anaphylactic shock and may require emergency medical care, according to Drugs.com. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include shortness of breath, a drop in blood pressure and an increased, but faint, heart rate.
