Depression is a condition marked by loss of energy, feelings of sadness, sleep disturbances, changes in appetite, irritability and loss of interest in social and daily activities. In some cases, it may be accompanied by feelings of worthlessness and thoughts of suicide. The exact cause of depression is not known, although genetics, poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyle and thyroid disorders may contribute to this condition, according to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." Certain vitamins may help alleviate the symptoms of depression. Talk to your doctor if you plan to treat depression with vitamins. Natural therapies should not replace counseling or medical attention for this condition.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is one of eight B vitamins that are essential for brain and nervous system function. This vitamin aids in the production of brain chemicals that help regulate mood, according to MayoClinic.com. A deficiency of vitamin B12 in your bloodstream is closely linked to depression. However, medical researchers have not concluded if depression is caused by vitaminB12 deficiency, or if lack of this vitamin in the bloodstream is caused by poor dietary choices linked to poor appetite, a common symptom of depression. Increase your intake of vitamin B12 by consuming meats, dairy products and eggs. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, you may need a vitamin B12 supplement to help alleviate the symptoms of depression.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a potent immune system enhancer, which may help prevent bacteria, virus and other foreign cells from attacking nerves that send impulses to your brain. Enhancing your immune system function may also help prevent illnesses and diseases that can contribute to depression, according to the Balches. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin -- since your body cannot manufacture it, you must obtain it from food sources or supplements. You can increase your intake of vitamin C by consuming avocados, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, blueberries, oranges and grapefruits.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6, or pyridoxine, is essential for the absorption of proteins from foods, according to the Balches. Your body uses these proteins to maintain healthy brain cells, which may help heal depression. It also helps soothe your nervous system, which may alleviate irritability and sadness associated with depression. Like vitamin C, vitamin B6 is a natural immune system enhancer. You can obtain vitamin B6 from food sources such as spinach, peas, sunflower seeds, eggs and fish. It is also available in supplement form, typically as part of a B complex vitamin supplement.
