The number of calories you burn while mowing the lawn is determined by calculating the amount of time it takes and your weight. Your choice of a manual mower or a power mower also will affect the number of calories you burn.

Formula

The formula for calculating calories burned while exercising is [(METs x 3.5 x weight in kg) ÷ 200] x amount of time in minutes. MET, or metabolic equivalent, is a number that represents the amount of energy you use while exercising. To determine your weight in kilograms, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2.

Energy Expended

When mowing the lawn, your METs can have a variety of values. The METs value for general lawn mowing, according to the Compendium of Physical Activities Tracking Guide for METs, is 5.5. If you're riding a lawn mower, your METs value is 2.5.

Calories Burned

If you weigh 130 lbs and it takes 60 minutes to manually mow your lawn, using a METs value of 5.5, you will burn 341 calories. If you weigh 130 lbs. and it takes you 25 minutes to mow your lawn using a riding mower, with a METs value of 2.5, you will burn 65 calories.
