Cayenne pepper is a powdered spice made from dried chili peppers. One of the chemicals in cayenne pepper is called capsaicin, the component that gives pepper its hot taste. Cayenne pepper has been used medicinally for hundreds of years. It may help alleviate pain, improve circulation and relieve indigestion. Although it is generally considered safe, some people may be allergic to cayenne pepper. Consult a doctor before using cayenne medicinally.

Pain Relief

Capsaicin, the active ingredient in cayenne pepper, may help alleviate pain by interfering with nervous system circuits that carry pain signals. Creams containing capsaicin may be applied over joints to relieve the pain of arthritis or over painful skin areas for patients suffering from shingles. It may also help alleviate nerve pain, for example in people who suffer from neuropathy caused by diabetes or other conditions. Capsaicin creams are generally available over-the-counter at drug stores. Consult a doctor before using cayenne medicinally.

Improving Blood Flow

Cayenne powder may also help improve the body's general circulation when taken internally. This may be helpful for people suffering from diabetes, low blood pressure or other circulatory problems. Because cayenne pepper is hot, the easiest way to consume it may be in capsule form, available at a health food store. Alternatively, dissolve a small amount of pepper, for example 1/16th of a tsp., in a glass of juice two or three times daily. Consult a doctor before using cayenne medicinally.

Aiding Digestion

Capsaicin in cayenne pepper may also help relieve several gastrointestinal problems. Although the way in which it acts is not yet known, capsaicin may stimulate secretion of digestive enzymes or it may acts as an anti-bacterial agent to suppress diarrhea. Cayenne pepper may be sprinkled directly on food to help digestion, or its spiciness may be minimized by consuming it in capsule form. Consult a doctor before using cayenne medicinally.
