The Super Seed fiber supplement is recommended as part of The Maker's Diet, a weight loss plan developed by Jordan Rubin, founder of whole foods nutrition company Garden of Life, which manufactures Super Seed. The supplement contains a combination of certified-organic seeds, legumes, grains and sprouted grains, along with a probiotic blend for better digestion. Consult a qualified health care provider before taking weight loss supplements.
Identification
The Maker's Diet, a 40-day plan, focuses on four pillars of total health -- physical, mental, spiritual and emotional. Detailed in Rubin's 2005 book of the same name, The Maker's Diet is based on both biblical and scientific concepts. For the first 14 days, you eliminate many foods, then gradually add the healthy ones back in over the next two phases of the program. Rubin recommends many supplements for this diet along with Super Seed.
Benefits
Super Seed provides nutrition, including essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, as well as soluble and insoluble fiber, and a proprietary enzyme formula to enhance digestion. It is claimed to improve bowel regularity, remove toxins and heavy metals, remove dietary cholesterol and triglycerides, and reduce the risk of colon cancer. The supplement may help with weight loss by decreasing absorption of carbohydrates and calories, increasing the feeling of fullness, and preventing blood sugar swings that result in hunger.
Ingredients
The seeds in Super Seed include buckwheat, flax, chia, pumpkin, sesame and sunflower. Super Seed also contains millet, sprouted amaranth and sprouted quinoa, and a high-fiber blend of beans including adzuki, garbanzo, kidney and red lentil. It includes cinnamon to stimulate digestion and help process sugars more efficiently. In addition, a blend called Poten-Zyme with 14 strains of beneficial micro-organisms enhances bio-availability and absorption by making the seeds and legumes easier to digest. This also reduces gas commonly caused by eating beans and seeds. The product label says Super Seed provides 24 percent of the Daily Value for dietary fiber, as well as 12 percent of the DV for protein, 11 percent for iron and 7 percent for calcium.
Usage
To use Super Seed, add one scoop to food or a beverage and consume it immediately. You can mix this powder with smoothies, fruit and vegetable juice, yogurt, soup, cereal and any other foods you like. Foods and beverages should be room temperature or cooler.
Considerations
The Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint and stipulated final order in 2006 for a $225,000 settlement involving Garden of Life and Rubin. The FTC determined that the supplement company had made unsubstantiated claims that their supplements could treat or cure many illnesses. Super Seed was not one of the supplements listed in the complaint.
