Creatine is a naturally occurring amino acid normally found in muscles of the body, according to MedlinePlus. Creatine is also available in foods such as meat and fish. Manmade creatine is often used to improve muscle mass and athletic performance in athletes. Use of creatine is allowed by the International Olympic Committee, National Collegiate Athletic Association and professional sports. But it may have negative effects on the pancreas.

Pancreas Damage

Consumption of excess amounts of creatine can cause damage to vital body organs such as the pancreas, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Damage to the pancreas may occur due to a single overdose episode or due to long-term exposure to high amounts of creatine. Damage to the pancreas is irreversible and usually results in digestive problems, diabetes and death.

Pancreatitis

Creatine use may lead to pancreatitis or inflammation of the pancreas in some patients, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. In pancreatitis, the pancreatic enzymes that help digest fats, carbohydrates and proteins become active inside the pancreas and start digesting the pancreas. Pancreatitis may cause permanent damage to the pancreas.

Pancreatic Tumor

Creatine use may cause the growth of tumors on the pancreas in some patients, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The tumors may lead to cancer of the pancreas. Creatine should only be taken for a long time under the supervision of a knowledgeable health provider. Taking creatine supplements for a long time may also prevent the body from making its own.
