A spring detox diet might be just the New Year's resolution that you're looking for. According to Elson Haas, the author of The New Detox Diet, "in the cycle of nature, spring is the new year." Haas explains that spring is the perfect time to detox as you get rid of the old and make way for the new. When you modify your diet to detox, you can help to cleanse your digestive system of any unwanted buildup and promote healing. Always speak with your doctor before attempting a detox diet.

Detoxification

A detoxification diet is intended to support your body's natural cleansing processes. This cleansing assists in the elimination of toxins, acid, mucus and waste from your system. While your organs are equipped to perform this cleansing process on their own, your diet can help to aid or slow the process. Thus, focusing on a detoxifying diet might give your organs the boost they need to cleanse and function more effectively.

Purging

As you consider purging the old for your spring cleanse, you can focus on which foods you consume that could be slowing your system. These typically include foods containing refined sugars and refined carbohydrates, hydrogenated and trans fats, processed ingredients and additives. This includes eliminating most junk foods, fast foods and fried foods. Also, reducing consumption of soda, coffee and alcohol can aid in your spring detox diet.

Spring Foods

As the spring season warms the air, you are more likely to enjoy cooling fruits and vegetables. These are the ideal ingredients for a spring detox. Spring fruits and vegetables offer valuable nutrients that can benefit your cleanse. Spring detox diets generally incorporate salads, smoothies and cold soups. Look for fresh spring fruits such as strawberries, apricots, grapefruits, peaches and lemons, along with fresh spring vegetables such as asparagus, spinach, spring onions, radishes, peas, chard and carrots to include in your cleanse. Supplement your meals with healthy nuts and whole grains.

Organic Foods

Organic foods are a popular choice for spring detox diets. Organic foods are free from most chemicals, pesticides, preservatives and artificial ingredients that could impede your body's cleansing process. Look for organic foods at your local grocery store or health food market. Organic foods should be clearly labeled.

Support

To get the most out of your spring cleanse, consider supporting your detox by drinking plenty of water, maintaining normal sleep patterns and exercising regularly. Cleansing exercises do not need to be strenuous; rather, they are intended keep your blood flowing and your system moving and processing. Cleansing activities could include brisk walking, yoga, tai-chi, or jumping on a mini-trampoline. Consult your health care specialist to choose an exercise program that is right for you.
