The number of calories people need depends on age, gender and level of physical activity. The calorie ranges listed here are for people with a moderately active lifestyle. Sedentary people require fewer calories, while active people need more.
Young Children
Children 2 to 3 years of age need 1,000 to 1,400 calories each day, according to the U. S. Department of Agriculture Dietary Guidelines for Americans. There is no difference in requirements for boys and girls at this age.
Females
Females 4 to 8 years of age require 1,400 to 1,600 calories daily, while those 9 to 13 years of age need 1,600 to 2,000. Women ages 14 to 18 should consume 2,000 calories each day, and females 19 to 30 years of age need 2,000 to 2,200. After age 30, the daily calorie requirement decreases to 2,000, and after age 50 to 1,800.
Males
Males 4 to 8 years of age need 1,400 to 1,600 calories each day. From 9 to 13 years of age, males need 1,800 to 2,200 calories daily, and from age 14 to 18, they require 2,400 to 2,800. Males 19 to 30 years of age need 2,600 to 2,800 calories daily. From ages 31 to 50, males need only 2,400 to 2,600 calories each day, and after 50 years of age, the daily requirement decreases to 2,200 to 2,400.
