Certain herbs help ease night sweats. According to MayoClinic.com, night sweats are bouts of nighttime sweating that soak your clothes and bedding. In most cases of night sweats, the temperature inside your bedroom is not unusually hot. Night sweats are a common problem experienced by many people from time to time. Before taking herbal supplements to help treat your night sweats, talk to your doctor about possible side effects, proper dosage and potential drug interactions.

Sage

Sage, also known as Salvia officinalis, is an herbal supplement that may be helpful for treating night sweats. According to Dr. William A. Mitchell Jr., a naturopathic physician and author of the book "Plant Medicine in Practice," sage, a member of the mint family, has been used as a remedy to help treat night sweats. Sage is an evergreen shrub native to the northern shoes of the Mediterranean sea. Sage has a pungent taste and possesses warming and drying tendencies. The dried leaves of the plant are used for medicinal purposes. Dr. Sharol Tilgner, a naturopathic physician and author of the book "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," states that sage is a carminative, astringent and antibacterial that has been used to help treat hot flashes, night sweats and mucus membrane irritation. If you are pregnant, cautions Tilgner, you should avoid taking this herbal supplement.

Schisandra

Ed Smith, an herbalist and author of the book "Therapeutic Herb Manual," states that schisandra, a member of the schisandraceae family, is a nutritive, antioxidant, adaptogen, astringent, expectorant, anti-tussive and calming sedative that stops spontaneous perspiration, including night sweats. Schisandra, also known as Schisandra chinensis, is a creeping ornamental plant native to Asia, especially China. Practitioners of botanical medicine use the fruit of the plant medicinally to help treat numerous health problems, including night sweats. According to Tilgner, schisandra may effectively treat night sweats, insomnia, hepatitis, cirrhosis, asthma and prolonged diarrhea. Schisandra may also help you build strength, improve your mental alertness and boost your work capacity. Schisandra has a pungent, sour, bitter and astringent taste and has warming tendencies.

White Peony

White peony is a flowering herbaceous perennial plant native to Asia, southern Europe and western North America that can reach a maximum height of approximately 10 feet. White peony, also known as Paeonia lactiflora, has large, fragrant white, yellow or red flowers that bloom in late spring or early summer. White peony belongs to the paeoniaceae family. Botanical.com states that the root of the plant -- dried, chopped or powdered -- is used to help treat health problems, including spontaneous sweating. White peony may be especially helpful for treating menstrual irregularities and health problems associated with menopause, such as hot flashes and night sweats. Mitchell notes that white peony may also be useful for treating bedsores, gout, asthma and cramps. If you have diarrhea due to AIDS or cancer, you should avoid taking this herb.
