Scars develop for a variety of reasons, including injuries to the skin, inflammation and infection. UAB Medicine explains that a scar forms from fibrous tissue, which replaces lost or damaged skin. The shape and texture of the scar depend on the type of injury that caused it to develop and any proactive care the skin received as it was forming. When scars develop on the face, the result can be devastating.
Step 1
Wash your face with your usual cleanser, patting your skin dry afterward with a clean towel.
Step 2
Apply a thin layer of liquid or cream makeup foundation to your face -- including the scars -- using a clean cosmetic sponge. Match your skin color closely to avoid an unnatural look. Spread the base evenly over your face.
Step 3
Brush a thin layer of cream concealer over the scar, using a thin cosmetic brush, such as the type used for eyebrows. Use a concealer that is a shade lighter than your skin if you have depressed scars. Use a concealer one shade darker than your natural skin tone if you have raised scars.
Step 4
Pick up a second clean cosmetic sponge and blend the concealer into your skin. Dab lightly with the sponge until the concealer and the scar become undetectable.
Step 5
Brush a layer of translucent finishing powder over your skin with a kabuki cosmetic brush. If you do not have translucent powder, apply baby powder. The finishing powder will set your foundation and concealer so that it stays on longer.
Tips and Warnings
- If you will be swimming, or if the weather is humid and you know you will be doing a lot of sweating, choose a waterproof cream concealer.
- Keep in mind that less is more when it comes to applying makeup to scars. A thick layer of makeup may actually draw more attention to the scars you are trying to cover. Make sure that any makeup you apply is well blended.
