How to Relieve Dry Itchy Eyes

According to the Mayo Clinic, the eyes are protected by a clear film, known as tears. The tear glands near the eyeballs continuously produce the moisturizing tears and replenish the film over the eye with each blink. A decrease in the production of tears can cause dry, itchy eyes. Other symptoms of dry eyes include blurred vision, redness and discomfort. Without tears, the eyes can develop dry patches that can become noticeable with blinking and rubbing. The Mayo Clinic points out several causes of dry eyes, including irritants such as smoke, wind or sun; poor tear quality; reduced tear production from age or disease; and medications.

Step 1

Wash the area around your eyes with a small amount of baby shampoo and warm water. Rinse thoroughly. Debris and irritants can easily be removed this way. Repeat each night or as directed by a doctor. According to the Mayo Clinic, washing the eye area is especially helpful for individuals with lid problems that prevent complete blinking. A doctor may prescribe an oral antibiotic or antibiotic drop to cure the lid problem.

Step 2

Add artificial tears, or eye drops to your eyes. This method is helpful in relieving itching and dryness. Use the drops as often as permitted by the label, which is typically without limitation. Apply the drops before engaging in an activity that you know will irritate your eyes. The Mayo Clinic warns against using drops that are made to remove redness, as this formula can further dry the eyes. Lubricating drops can also be effective in preventing dryness and irritation. This type may blur vision and should be used before bed.

Step 3

Prevent air from blowing straight into your eyes. This can be especially irritating if the air is hot. Wear glasses or goggles if necessary for wind surfing, skiing and swimming.

Step 4

Run a personal humidifier during winter months when you are running the heat. Dry, warm air can further dry your eyes.

Step 5

VIsit your eye doctor if these steps are not helpful. You may be give a prescription eye drop or ointment. Surgical procedures can eliminate eye lid or tear duct malfunctions that cause dry eyes.
