Psoriasis Hair Treatment

Hair treatments such as medicated shampoos are used to treat symptoms of mild scalp psoriasis. Harsher medications used to treat severe scalp psoriasis can temporarily damage the hair. In addition to specially hair products and medications, proper hair brushing, drying and styling techniques can help treat psoriasis and prevent hair loss.

Types

Mild scalp psoriasis can be treated with shampoos that contain coal tar, menthol or salicylic acid. Other methods include gentle hair brushing, air drying hair and parting hair properly for effective ultra violet (UV) light treatment.

Function

Using medicated shampoos and cool air hair drying methods can help relieve scalp itchiness and dryness. Positioning the hair to allow UV light from natural sunlight or special devices to reach the scalp helps prevent the characteristic overgrowth of skin cells.

Benefits

Hair treatments that alleviate symptoms of scalp psoriasis can prevent the build-up of plaque-like skin cells that are not only itchy and unsightly but can break off from the scalp and cause hair loss.

Effects

Some of the stronger medications used to treat severe psoriasis are harsh on the scalp and can cause hair to break off or fall out.

Considerations

All psoriasis hair treatments, even shampoos, are meant to treat the scalp. Thin, short, well-parted and shaved hair help ensure the treatment reaches all areas of the scalp
