Reservatrol is a fat-soluble antioxidant found is a select variety of plant foods that shows promise as a dietary element that can prevent illness. According to Oregon State University, or OSU, reservatrol has potential as a way to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. While more research needs to be done, a diet high in plant foods is healthy so adding those that contain reservatrol may protect you in the future and are part of a healthy and balanced diet.
Red Wine
Red wine is made from grapes and packs a good dose of reservatrol. Drinking a glass of red wine a day, therefore, can reduce the chances of cancer cells growing in your body. In addition, OSU reports that regular consumption of red wine can also lower your risk of heart disease due to this powerful compound that is found in the grapes that make up red wine. MayoClinic.com adds that the research regarding reservatrol in red wine was done on animals and the true health benefits to humans hasn't been solidified. However, they also say that indications show that healthy amounts of reservatrol in your body from red wine can lessen the damage to your blood vessels, helping to prevent high cholesterol and blood clots. According to OSU, a 5-oz. glass of red wine can contain up to 1.89 mg of reservatrol.
Peanuts
Peanuts should be eaten in moderation due to calorie content, but a handful contains a healthy amount of reservatrol, up to 1.28 mg per cup, reports OSU. Peanuts make a good snack and can be added to stir-fry, salads or trail mix to help you get some beneficial reservatrol into your diet each day. Again, more studies need to be completed to gain a definitive answer regarding reservatrol's health benefits, but evidence tentatively points to a reduction in the risk of esophageal, intestinal, breast and colon cancer with daily doses of reservatrol. Nuts, peanuts included, are also a good source of heart-healthy fats so adding a serving a few days per week is going to be good for your health, regardless of the reservatrol they contain. Peanut butter is also a good way to add some reservatrol to your diet.
Berries
According to OSU, berries such as blueberries and cranberries contain reservatrol, with amounts varying depending on where they are grown and how processed they are. Berries are a good addition to cereal, oatmeal, salads, yogurt or can be eaten alone or made into a healthy juice. Berries are a good source of nutrients in addition to reservatrol so they should have a place in a balanced diet anyway. However, adding reservatrol containing berries to your diet may be able to prevent cancer, but they are also low in calories, which can help you control your weight and live longer, reports OSU. Many wines are also made with berries so drinking those varieties will help you get a good amount of reservatrol into your diet.
