Facts on Laser Tattoo Removal
1. To Remove or Not to Remove
That tattoo you got way back when may not seem like such a good idea anymore. But how do you decide if you should have it removed? Tattoo removal can be painful and costly. Take into consideration how large the tattoo is, what it is of and where it is located. A tattoo no one really sees may be something you can live with. However a large highly visible tattoo that does not fit your lifestyle may be worth removing.
2. It May Not Work for All Tattoos
Laser tattoo removal may not be completely effective on all types of tattoos. Tattoos that are very big and cover a large area of your body may be hard to remove. Other factors which will determine how easy a tattoo can be removed include how old the tattoo is and what colors of ink were used. Older tattoos are usually easier to remove. Some colors such as black are more easily removed through the laser. Some dermatologists perform laser tattoo removal. Go for a consultation to determine if you are a good candidate for removal.
3. How Does the Laser Work?
A laser beams shoots an intense light beam through your skin at the tattoo and helps break up the ink. The body's immune system then kicks in and helps the ink be absorbed by the body. It may hurt to have the procedure done. However the light being directed at the tattoo is not harmful and will not cause damage to the skin. If your tattoo is near your face you will need to wear protective eye goggles during the removal.
4. This May Take a While
A session to remove a tattoo only takes a few minutes. Usually most tattoos will require more than one session. For example some tattoos can take twenty sessions to be removed. Your doctor will determine the number of sessions needed at the consultation. Although it may depend on how well your body responds to the procedure and you may end up needing a few more sessions than expected. You will need to schedule sessions a few weeks apart to give your body time to absorb the tattoo pigment.
5. Prepare for Removal
There are some things you can do to prepare for laser tattoo removal to ease the discomfort. The laser beam may produce a burning sensation. You can take over the counter pain medications an hour before your session. Numbing cream may be applied a half hour before removal, but it will need to be wiped off during the procedure. After laser tattoo removal apply an antibiotic cream if directed. Ice can be applied to reduce pain after the session. Keep the area clean and covered with gauze. Avoid rubbing the area or scrubbing too hard when taking a shower
