More than one third of all adults in the U.S. are obese -- defined as a body mass index of 30 or above -- the "Wall Street Journal" reports. Obesity significant increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart attacks and stroke. A low carb diet may aid in weight loss, the Mayo Clinic reports. Because they contain more protein, low carb diets may promote fullness and decrease appetite. However, snacking while following a low carb diet can be a challenge. Many snacks like cookies, rice cakes and pretzels are rich in carbohydrates. Fortunately, there are a number of good low carb snacks that you can use to fill you up between meals.
Celery
Celery, like most vegetables, is low in carbs. However, celery has even less carbs than many starchy veggies like carrots, tomatoes and corn. Also, celery is portable and perfect for on-the-go low carb snacking. To add flavor, dip your celery stalks into low carb peanut butter or almond butter. One medium celery stalk contains 10 calories and only 3 g of carbohydrates, Peer Trainer reports.
Beef Jerky
Beef Jerky may not be considered the healthiest food around, but beef jerky is a perfect portable protein source for low carb dieters. It's rich in protein and low in carbs. A 28-g serving of beef jerky contains 13 g of protein but only 4 g of carbs, Peer Trainer reports. Also, beef jerky tends to be produced from lean cuts of beef, making it a low fat snack as well.
Hard-Boiled Eggs
Eggs aren't just for breakfast. Hard-boiled eggs can be taken with you whenever you're craving a protein-rich snack without the carbs. A single large, hard-boiled egg contains less than 1 g of carbohydrate, Peer Trainer reports. Donald Layman of Tufts University reports in the January edition of "Nutrition Today" that consuming egg protein regularly can enhance weight loss results when combined with a reduced calorie diet.
Greek Yogurt
Many brands of yogurt contain significant amounts of carbohydrates in the form of added sugar. However, Greek-style yogurt has less than half of the carbs of most commercial yogurts. Peer Trainer reports that a 6-oz serving of fat-free Greek-style yogurt contains 7 g of carbs.
