Holiday parties are a chance to celebrate, mingle and indulge in special treats. Choose carefully and stick to small portions and you can keep from ruining your diet.

Appetizers

Holiday parties often feature assorted appetizers that range in calories. A 2-tbsp. serving of spinach, artichoke and Parmesan dip contains 100 calories, according to the CalorieKing website. A 2-tbsp. serving of a cheddar ball contains 90 calories. A serving of four cocktail shrimps has 27 calories. A serving of two stuffed mushroom caps contains 50 calories.

Cocktails

Holiday parties are known for a wide selection of cocktails and other beverages. A 5-oz. glass of red wine contains 125 calories, according to MayoClinic.com. An 8-oz. glass of spiced apple cider contains 117 calories. An 8-oz. glass of hot cocoa made with whole milk contains 192 calories. An 8-oz. glass of alcoholic eggnog has 391 calories.

Tips

Look for reduced-fat eggnog. Choose sugar-free hot cocoa. Limit cheeses and dips and look for low-calorie dishes like shrimp or fruit. Don't stand right by the buffet; spend time mingling instead. Offer to bring a low-calorie dish to the party. Don't arrive at the party famished; this way, you won't overeat.
