Homeopathic medicine is a complete form of natural medicine, that was developed 200 years ago in Germany by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann and has been used in the United States since the early 1900s. Like acupuncture or ayurvedic medicine, homeopathy is a whole medical system, and can be employed for the treatment and prevention of a variety of diseases, including high cholesterol.

Homeopathic Remedies

The effects of homeopathic remedies are confirmed by the serial testing of these medicines in healthy volunteers to learn about their therapeutic benefits. Other reliable sources that are used in homeopathy come from toxicology reports, double blind placebo controlled studies and clinical experience.

Constitutional Remedy

Constitutional remedy is the medicine the perfectly matches the totality of symptoms of one person. For example, if an individual suffers from multiple conditions, such as high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure, this single remedy will cover all these ailments. There are over 2,000 remedies that have been studied by the homeopaths and any of those remedies can be chosen for an individual who has high cholesterol levels in the blood.

Disease Specific Remedy

Dr. Reckeweg, MD and homeopathic researcher, proposed to treat each condition separately, like conventional medicine. For example, for the treatment of high cholesterol a combination of three remedies may help individuals suffering from this condition.

Allium sativum D 1 is derived from garlic and Dr. Reckeweg notes several qualities. This remedy helps reduce elevated cholesterol level as well as LDL or bad cholesterol, and increases blood level of HDL or the good cholesterol. This medicine also has a blood-thinning effect.

According to Dr. Reckeweg, Crateagus oxycantha D 1 helps lower high blood pressure, decrease cholesterol levels and prevents deposit of cholesterol in the arterial walls. Viscum album D2 decreases the viscosity of the blood and may reduce high blood pressure among other symptoms.

Homeopathic remedies are considered safe, when taken as prescribed by a qualified homeopath. A short period of worsening the symptoms following the first few doses of homeopathic remedies have been documented by homeopaths. However, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine suggests that clinical studies did not find enough evidence of symptom aggravation. The same source states that there are no known interactions with conventional drugs, although more research should be conducted regarding the safety of these medicines.

Homeopathy is still a controversial form of medicine, especially among conventional trained physicians because this system of medicine can not be fully explained by science. Research regarding the treatment of high cholesterol with homeopathy is limited, thus homeopathy should not be used as a single form of treatment for this condition. Homeopathic remedies do not replace conventional treatment and should be used as recommended by a qualified homeopath.
