ALA may increase the risk of macular degeneration and prostate cancer, and may interfere with the absorption of certain medications, including blood-thinning medications, cholesterol-lowering medications and blood-sugar lowering medications, according to UMMC.

The Mayo Clinic suggests a dose between 0.8 g and 1.1 g of ALA per day for healthy individuals, along with 0.3 g to 0.5 g of EPA and DHA. One tablespoon of flaxseed oil contains about 7 g of ALA, which is approximately equivalent to 1 g of fish oil, according to UMMC.
