Resveratrol is a natural antioxidant found in grapes, certain vines, pine trees, peanuts, and Japanese knotweed. Dietary supplements usually source their resveratrol from grapes and Japanese knotweed, the most abundant sources of this unique antioxidant. Resveratrol is claimed to improve heart health, fight cancer, decrease blood sugar and encourage longevity. Resveratrol ingredients include antioxidants, grape skin and seed extract, Japanese knotweed, quercetin, and green tea.
Antioxidants
Resveratrol is one of many antioxidants known as polyphenols. While there are several sources of these healthful antioxidants, wine grapes contain large amounts, resveratrol being one. In addition, they contain antioxidants known as proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins.
Grape Extracts
Grape seed extract is found in many resveratrol products. Besides being one source of resveratrol, it is the highest in proanthocynidin antioxidants, which have many benefits for heart health and longevity. Also found in many resveratrol products is grape skin, which contains the polyphenols known as anthocyanins. Anthocyanins give purple and red fruits their color.
Japanese Knotweed
Also known as Polygonum cuspidatum, Japanese knotweed has been used traditionally in Asian heart and liver tonics. It is a stalk-like weed that contains high amounts of resveratrol. Many companies source resveratrol from Japanese knotweed because it is more efficient and cost-effective than sourcing from red wine grapes.
Quercetin
Like resveratrol, quercetin is a single-molecule substance with antioxidant properties and many health benefits. Some products include quercetin because it can prolong the activity of resveratrol in the body, according to the Life Extension Foundation.
Green Tea
Green tea is another potent source of polyphenol antioxidants, including catechins and epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG. Many resveratrol products include it because it is a natural addition to any antioxidant formula. Green tea's many antioxidants may support and contribute to the healthful benefits of resveratrol.
