Omega-3 supplements are derived from fish oil, vegetables and other plant sources. Although most people can take omega-3 supplements without any adverse reactions, certain conditions can increase the risk of experiencing unwanted side effects. If you have been diagnosed with a fish allergy, MedlinePlus recommends that you talk with your doctor before using an omega-3 supplement. Those who should exercise particular caution are people with diabetes, liver disease or a known history of depression.

Common Side Effects

MedlinePlus says taking omega-3 supplements can cause common side effects including, but not limited to, bad breath, nosebleeds, rash, heartburn, nausea, loose stools and belching. If you experience any of these side effects, try taking the supplement with food or freezing the omega-3 supplement before using it. This may reduce the chances of adverse effects.

Drug Interactions

You may experience adverse reactions to an omega-3 supplement while taking other medications. Drug interactions are common with blood thinners; estrogens such as those in birth control pills; diuretic pills; and beta-blockers, according to Drugs.com. This is not a complete list of possible drug interactions. You need to discuss the use of omega-3 supplements with your doctor before implementing them into your diet.

Fish Allergy

If you've been diagnosed with a fish allergy, you may experience common allergy symptoms while taking an omega-3 supplement. Most omega-3 supplements contain fish oil. Although MedlinePlus says fish proteins are not in omega-3 supplements, it's possible protein byproducts may be present. Common fish allergy symptoms include hives, shortness of breath or swelling in the lips, tongue or face. In extreme cases, a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis occurs, in which the entire body goes into shock, often involving the aforementioned symptoms, though more severe, according to MayoClinic.com.

Overdose

If you take more than the recommended dose of omega-3 supplements daily, you may experience adverse reactions. It is not recommended by MedlinePlus that you take more than three grams a day of omega-3's. Taking more than three grams daily may increase your chance of thinning your blood and bleeding. High doses of omega-3's may also compromise your immune system's effectiveness. This will leave you more vulnerable to infection and disease. Too much omega-3's can also increase your LDL cholesterol levels.

Warning

If you are allergic to fish, omega-3 fish oil can cause anaphylactic shock, which can lead to death. If you have a known severe allergy to fish, carry an epinephrine injection on your person at all times.
