Avonex Effects on Renal Function

Avonex is an antiviral medication with antiproliferative and immunoregulatory properties prescribed for Multiple Sclerosis sufferers. The drug is administered by intramuscular injection in order to slow the progress of relapsing-remitting (Stage 1) MS. The drug helps keep physical disability from progressing and lessens the number and frequency of attacks upon the myelin sheath nerve membrane that cause loss of muscle control in MS. Some common side effects from Avonex include headaches, depression and fatigue. Difficulties with renal function are less common.

Dark, Decreased Urine

Dark and decreased urine production is one form of renal function abnormality listed by Mayo Clinic staff for those taking Avonex. Both the lessened amount and darker color are rare side effects reported by patients.

Increased Urinary Tract Infections

Increased Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) have been reported by some patients using Avonex. Drugs.com said 17 percent of those reporting unwanted side effects of the drug had more UTIs than before taking the drug.

Bladder Control, Spasms and Pain

Other renal function effects of some patients taking Avonex included loss of bladder control with muscle spasms and abdominal pain, according to Mayo Clinic staff.

Kidney toxicity

Although rare, kidney toxicity in the form of membranous glomerulonephritis was reported by the National Institutes of Health. Cleveland Clinic describes this malady as "the inflammation of the membrane tissue in the kidney that serves as a filter, separating wastes and extra fluid from the blood." This is rare, but it can lead to kidney failure.
