First detected in the United States in April 2009, the swine flu is a newer and more devastating influenza strain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Also known as H1N1 the swine flu has similar characteristics to flu strains found in pigs and birds. According to the Mayo Clinic, swine flu signs and symptoms develop three to five days after first exposure and generally last up to eight days.
Common Signs
According to Flu.gov, the swine flu has similar signs and symptoms to the seasonal flu. Initially individuals experience the following signs: sneezing, coughing, sore throat, fevers and chills. Shortly after the initial signs and symptoms, individuals may experience muscle aches, sore or stiff joints and headaches.
Gastrointestinal Problems
Unlike the seasonal flu, the swine flu can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea. According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDIC), diarrhea is defined as loose or watery stools and is typically passed more than three times a day. A major complication of the swine flu is that persistent diarrhea can lead to dehydration. If you're suffering these gastrointestinal problems it's important to consume plenty of liquids.
Respiratory Problems
Serious respiratory illnesses like pneumonia can be caused by the swine flu. According to the Merck Manual, pneumonia is an infection of the lung's smaller air sacs and the surrounding tissue. Over 45,000 Americans die from pneumonia each year. The Merck Manual also defines respiratory failure as a condition when the level of carbon dioxide in the blood becomes too high or the blood's oxygen levels become too low.
Immediate Medical Attention
According to the Mayo Clinic, if you are pregnant or have a chronic disease like heart disease then you should seek medical attention immediately if you catch the swine flu. Flu.gov also recommends immediate medical attention if individuals experience the following signs or symptoms: dehydration, high fevers, persistent diarrhea or vomiting, abdominal or chest pains and breathing difficulties.
