In Italian, barista means bartender. In the United States, a barista refers to a person who makes coffee drinks. The amount of calories a barista burns depends on the length of her work shift and the barista's weight.

Formula

To calculate the calories you burn during a shift as a barista, use this formula: (METs x 3.5 x weight in kg) ÷ 200) x length of shift minutes. MET, or metabolic equivalent, is a number that represents how much energy is expended while performing a task. To convert your weight to kilograms, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2. You weigh 72.7 kg if your weight in pounds is 160.

METs Value

The MET value for a barista job, which requires standing, light lifting and constant moving, ranges from 2.3 to 4 if your job allows little time to rest and requires continuously lifting light objects.

Calories Burned

If you weigh 165 lbs., you can burn 1,217 calories on a slow, seven-hour shift. On a busy shift, by constantly moving around and carrying light objects, you can burn 2,117 calories on a seven-hour shift or 1,210 calories on a short, four-hour shift.
