Modern engineering and newer, lightweight materials have made transport chairs increasingly economical, portable and comfortable. A lightweight transport chair provides greater mobility for an individual who is either unable to walk or has difficulty walking. While most lightweight transport chairs have similar features, chairs are made in different sizes and with a variety of functions and materials.

Materials

Some transport chairs, such as those used to transport patients in hospitals, have a steel frame, though lightweight personal models tend to be made from aluminum. According to the Aluminum Association, aluminum is ideal for lightweight engineering because the metal weighs less than steel or iron without compromising its durability or giving it a brittle quality.
While some luxury chairs use leather for the seat and back, the newer, more economical models generally use lightweight nylon padding. Some models may also have nylon seat belts. The wheels are made of either plastic or, more typically, rubber, and there may or may not be footrests, which are usually made of durable plastic.

Engineering

Lightweight transport chairs are engineered to minimize weight while still optimizing stability and portability. The chair is mounted on four wheels; the size of the wheels may vary from the front to the back. To be considered "lightweight," the maximum weight for a typical chair is 30 lb., although certain specialty chairs, such as a reclining chair or a chair with special electrical components, may be considered lightweight even when exceeding this amount.
Lightweight transport chairs are usually collapsible for easier storage in a car or closet.

Market

According to Dynamic Living Incorporated, lightweight transport chairs are easy to travel with and are perfect for individuals who don't need a wheelchair all the time. These chairs are useful for trips to the doctor's office, park or neighbor's house. The chair may also be used by persons who are unable to operate a wheelchair and require assistance.
Because the chair is made of lightweight material, it is intended for extended use on smooth, groomed terrain.

Sizes

Chair size varies depending on the size of the person using it, as well as how the chair is used during transportation. For instance, a reclining chair will be taller than a regular chair to provide head support while in the reclining position. A chair may have other unique attributes, such as leg straps or electronics, to accommodate the needs of different individuals.
Seat width can range from 19 to 24 inches.

Cost

Depending on the luxury or special requirements of a chair, the cost may range anywhere from just under $100 to over $1,000.
