Following the right diet is important in the prevention and treatment of a variety of different diseases, including gout. This painful condition is caused when too much uric acid builds up in the blood and crystallizes around joints. The recommended diet for those suffering from gout has gotten less strict since research has found that not all sources of purines increase the risk of a gout attack.
Gout Features
Gout is a type of arthritis that usually causes pain, redness, stiffness and swelling in the joints. Not all joints are equally affected. The big toe is one of the first locations people usually develop gout, though gout can also affect the ankles, elbows, fingers, heels, insteps, knees and wrists.
Diet Recommendations
Limit animal sources of protein, as these are particularly high in purines, and get most of your protein from plant sources, which are less likely to cause a gout attack. Increase fluids, but avoid alcohol, because alcohol makes it harder for your body to eliminate uric acid. Avoid high-sugar foods and fatty foods, and concentrate on consuming more complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains, and fewer refined carbohydrates. This will help you keep your weight controlled, as being overweight makes gout worse.
Research
A 2004 study by Hyon K. Choi, M.D., Dr.P.H. published in the "New England Journal of Medicine" found that although seafood and meat increased the risk of a gout attack, consumption of dairy products reduced the risk of an attack. Eating vegetables high in purines in moderation did not affect the risk of a gout attack.
Considerations
Diet is not the only factor that can cause an attack. Alcohol, drugs, illness or a stressful event may also bring on an attack. Early on, attacks may resolve themselves. Your doctor may prescribe medications to help prevent attacks.
Expert Insight
MayoClinic.com notes that following the gout diet may help to lower the number of attacks and the severity of the attacks that you have, although it may not lower the amount of uric acid in your body enough to keep you off gout medication. It is also a healthy diet overall.
