Though no scientific data exists that proves colon cleanses are healthy for the body, many individual swear by their benefits. For example, many claim that it boosts your immune system, helps with weight loss and even prevents serious ailments like cancer. Before completing a colon cleanse, speak to your doctor about the pros and cons. She can also answer any questions about colon cleanses you may have.

Diet

Though you do not need to drastically alter your diet before a colon cleanse, it's wise to consume healthy foods that promote consistent bowel movements. That includes many raw fruits and vegetables and foods high in fiber. A diet that's low in refined sugars, saturated fats and sodium is also advised. If you're meeting with a doctor for a colon irrigation procedure, avoid consuming alcohol or solid food for 24 hours, advises the Indiana University Department of Medicine.

Types

Colon cleanses come in many forms. Some are store-bought products that can be found online and at most pharmacies or super stores. You can also use a natural colon cleansing product that uses only earth-made ingredients to rid the colon of toxins and waste. You may also visit a doctor who can perform a colon irrigation procedure. Lastly, you can take an ayurvedic route. According to the Healing Daily website, a DIY colon cleanse consists of fasting on water and fruit/vegetable juices, taking probiotics, eating flaxseeds, and performing a saltwater enema.

Candidates

Colon cleanses are not for everyone. If you have consistent bowel movements and are generally healthy, a colon cleanse is likely unnecessary. Contrarily, if you do not pass solid waste at least once a day or if your bowel movements are inconsistent, you may want to speak to your doctor about whether or not a colon cleanse is an appropriate option. Those who are often constipated may especially benefit from a colon cleanse, explains the Healing Daily site.

Benefits

According to Go Ask Alice!, Columbia University's health Q&A website, colon cleanses are supposed to remove toxins and hardened fecal matter stuck within the colon's walls. Proponents claim that by removing the waste, the body becomes less susceptible to various ailments, including cancer. This claim, and claims regarding weight loss, aren't backed by scientific data, states the Go Ask Alice! site.

Warning

Several risks are associated with colon cleanses. For example, colon cleanses may damage the body by removing healthy bacteria and important minerals, warns Go Ask Alice!. Colon cleanses may also lead to dehydration or electrolyte imbalance. In severe cases, they can result in heart failure due to the presence of too much liquid being absorbed by the colon.
