The number of calories you lose in a day depends on your own personal metabolic rate and how physically active you are. It is possible to estimate the number of calories you burn by calculating your basal metabolic rate and then taking into consideration your activity level.

Considerations

Your body size and age will impact the number of calories you burn. Heavier people lose more calories each day than lighter people. As you get older, your metabolic rate has a natural tendency to slow. More muscle mass requires an increased number of calories to be used to maintain tissue structure.

Basal Metabolic Rate

Women and men calculate their basal metabolic rate with different equations. A woman can calculate her rate by the following formula: 655 + (4.35 x her weight in lbs.) + (4.7 x her height in inches) -- (4.7 x her age in years). A man finds his basal metabolic rate with the following formula: 66 + (6.23 x his weight in lbs.) + (12.7 x his height in inches) -- (6.8 x his age in years).

Activity Level

Once you find your basal metabolic rate, multiply your value by your activity level. If you are sedentary, meaning you don't exercise and sit most of the day, multiply your basal metabolic rate by 1.2. If you exercise lightly one to three days per week, you are considered lightly active and should multiply your basal metabolic rate by 1.375. Moderately active means you exercise three to five days per week, and you should therefore multiply your basal metabolic rate by 1.55. If you're very active and work out six to seven days per week, multiply your rate by 1.725. If you're an athlete or have a physically active profession, multiply your basal metabolic rate by 1.9. Your answer you receive from multiplying your basal metabolic rate with your rate of activity level is the number of calories you lose in a day.
