Although eye exercises may not give you perfect vision, they can help improve a variety of vision disorders, according to Dr. Janice Wensveen. Many optometrists are now prescribing vision exercises as daily homework to help improve eyesight problems such as convergence insufficiency. The key to success with these exercises is daily dedication to practicing them, according to Science Daily.
Shifting
Shifting is a yoga eye exercise that requires you shift your focus rapidly from detail to detail. This exercise engages the central part of the retina, which is responsible for clear vision, according to Yoga Journal. Begin this exercise sitting comfortably with your head in neutral alignment, with your focus straight ahead. Move your focus to any object in your line of sight and focus on the smallest detail of the object. Hold this gaze for five to eight seconds and then shift your focus to another object in your line of sight and focus on the smallest detail. Continue shifting your gaze and focusing on small details of objects in your line of sight for three to five minutes.
Push-Pull Exercises
According to MedlinePlus, push-pull eye exercises can correct sensory eye dominance, which impairs depth perception. Cover or close your left eye while working your right eye with focus and shift exercises. Gaze your right eye on a pencil or your finger and follow it from the far right to the far left, then shift your gaze to any object 10 feet away and hold your gaze for five to eight seconds. Relax both eyes and cover your right eye while doing the focus and shift exercises on your left eye.
High and Low
The high and low eye exercise helps with focus and stretches the eyes. Sit upright with your gaze straight ahead. Look both eyes up toward your eyebrows and hold for three to five seconds, then slowly circle your eyes clockwise in a full circle two to three times. Relax your eyes, then look down toward your cheeks and hold for three to five seconds. Slowly circle your eyes counter-clockwise in a full circle two to three times.
