MayoClinic.com notes that to lose 1 or 2 lbs. within a week, you must burn 500 to 1,000 more calories than you consume per day.

Losing 10 lbs.

It is best to lose weight gradually. Ten pounds would safely be lost over the course of several weeks if you must burn at least 500 more calories per day than you take in.

Fitness Guidelines

It is important to stay physically active whether or not you are trying to lose weight. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that a healthy adult do 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five days a week.
