After becoming known for fluid replacement drinks, Gatorade introduced vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry fitness shakes in 2001. As sports nutrition knowledge expanded, Gatorade reformulated nutrition shakes into G1 Pro Prime and G3 Pro Recovery drinks. G2 drinks are electrolyte drinks to be drunk during a workout. Drink Gatorades G1 pre-workout nutrition shake 3 to 4 hours before competition and G3 protein recovery shake 30 to 60 minutes after your workout, then another G3 shake one to two hours later. Gatorade G1 and G3 come in 11 oz. bottles.

Water

The primary ingredient in G1 and G3 nutrition shakes is water. In addition to the water everyone requires, athletes need extra water to replace fluids lost in sweat. In hot weather, you should weight yourself before and after working out. The weight you lost is due to sweat. You need to drink 24 oz. of water for every pound you lost during your workout.

Sugar

Gatorade nutrition shakes supply easily digestible carbohydrates by using sucrose syrup. Your body stores energy in muscles as glycogen. Saint Louis University recommends their athletes consume rapidly absorbed carbohydrates to quickly replenish glycogen stores. Gatorade shakes have about 360 calories.

Protein

Gatorade shakes have 20 g milk protein isolate that helps rebuild muscles. Having carbohydrates, water and protein within an hour of finishing your workout and 2 hours later has been shown to improve recovery from a workout. Milk protein may increase lean muscle mass faster than other sources of protein.

Other Ingredients

To replace minerals lost in sweat, Gatorade shakes contain sodium and potassium. Other minerals added to Gatorade shakes are manganese, zinc, and iron. The G1 and G3 shakes are also fortified with several vitamins to help your body rebuild muscles. Natural and artificial flavors are used to give Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry shakes their taste.

To give the shakes a desirable texture cellulose gum and carrageen are added to Gatorade shakes. Mono and diglycerides are emulsifiers that keeps oil from separating.
