Morning sickness is a very common pregnancy malady, striking 50 percent to 90 percent of pregnant women, according to MayoClinic.com. In severe cases, morning sickness can require hospitalization and intravenous hydration, but generally speaking, morning sickness is unpleasant but not serious. Various behaviors and home remedies might help, such as snacking frequently on bland foods like dry toast and crackers and avoiding strong-smelling foods. In addition, some women find relief from vitamin supplements such as B12.
Step 1
Eat foods high in vitamin B12. The University of Michigan states that vitamin B12 is known to relieve nausea and vomiting, so increasing your intake of vitamin B12-rich foods should be helpful. Some vitamin B12 food sources are animal products such as fish, meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products. Fortified cereal and fortified soy milk also provide B12, says the Harvard School of Public Health.
Step 2
Take a B12 supplement. Discuss this with your obstetrician first, but a B12 supplement might be beneficial, particularly if your nausea makes it difficult to consume foods high in vitamin B12.
Step 3
Take a multivitamin. Most pregnant women are instructed by their physicians to take a prenatal vitamin anyway, and doing so should ensure that you consume vitamin B12 even if you are avoiding animal products. Speak to your doctor about taking a multivitamin in addition to a separate B12 supplement if you are interested in taking both. At present, there is no set upper limit for this vitamin, says the Harvard School of Public Health.
