The Hospital Metabolism Diet is also known as the Hospital Diet or the Sacred Heart Hospital Diet. The diet places emphasis on the consumption of soup, which is supposed to act as a rapid weight loss aid and full body cleanser, as outlined by Sacred Heart Soup. There is no scientific evidence to prove the effectiveness of this diet for long-term weight loss. You should not attempt such a diet without consulting your doctor first.

History

The Hospital Metabolism Diet, which became popular in the early 1970s, was designed to help people lose weight quickly by adhering to a low-calorie eating plan that consisted of a vegetable or meat-based soup and unlimited fruits and vegetables. Anyone undertaking the diet is advised to consume an unlimited quantity of the soup as well as plenty of water.

Diet Regime

The Hospital Metabolism Diet is supposed to last for seven days; the diet states that it is possible to lose up to 17 lbs. in that period. The regimen allows the dieter to stop the diet for a period of two days and then resume it, in order to reach his weight loss goal.

Details

The diet states that for the first day of the plan, dieters should eat an unlimited amount of soup with plenty of fruits and vegetables. The only fruit that is forbidden on the first day is bananas. For the duration of the diet, vegetables, low-fat milk, fiber-rich foods and lean meat should be consumed, along with plenty of water, according to Sacred Heart Soup. Dieters should stay away from simple carbohydrates such as soda, white bread, white rice, white pasta and alcohol. All refined sugar that comes in the form of candy and other sweet treats should be completely avoided. Homemade fruit juices are permitted, along with unsweetened black tea and coffee.

Caution

Before beginning a diet as restrictive as the Hospital Metabolism Diet, dieters should consult a medical professional to make sure they are in good health. Diets that heavily restrict the consumption of certain foods are not realistic or sustainable over the long term, which is why people often give up.

Misconceptions

The Hospital Metabolism Diet has appeared in many different forms over the years, such as the "Cabbage Soup Diet," the "Miracle Soup Diet" and the "Sacred Heart Hospital Diet." One of the most popular myths pertaining to this diet is that the diet originated in the Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital, where heart surgeons devised the diet to help heart patients lose weight. This myth has since been dispelled by the Sacred Heart Medical Center, which has clarified that it does not and never has endorsed such a diet.
