Blue crabs live along the Atlantic Coast, from Nova Scotia down to the Gulf of Mexico. Blue crab are often steamed and served whole. The meat is also used to make crab cakes and other dishes with crab as the focus.

According to The Daily Plate, there are 87 calories in 3 oz. of cooked blue crab meat. Blue crabs vary in size and meat content. Approximately 14 percent of total crab weight is edible meat, according to The Blue Crab Archives.

Nutrition

Crab meat is low in fat and a good source of protein. According to The Daily Plate, there are 1.5 mg of fat, 17.5 mg of protein and 85 mg of cholesterol in 3 oz. of blue crab meat. Most of the fat is unsaturated fat.

Considerations

On its own, blue crab meat can be a healthy protein option. Calories increase significantly depending on how the crab is prepared and served. Crab cakes, which contain eggs, mayonnaise, bread crumbs and other ingredients, are much higher in calories than crab meat on its own. According to The Daily Plate, there are 170 calories in one crab cake.
