Uses for Steroid Creams

Steroid creams are topical medications. They are applied to the skin, and the steroid in the cream is absorbed through the skin. Steroid cream medications should be used as directed by the label or prescribed by a physician. There can be side effects of elevated steroid levels in the body, so the cream should not be overused. Many of the uses for steroid cream are for skin conditions. The cream should not be used on a child without medical direction because children are more likely to absorb larger quantities of steroids through the skin.

Dry Skin

Skin that is dry and itchy may improve with the use of moisturizers. Also, adding humidifiers to rooms in the home can elevate the amount of moisture in the air and improve the skin condition. However, if the condition does not improve, steroid cream can be used as a treatment. It should not be used for more than one to two weeks. The treatment with a steroid cream can reduce itching. Scratching less can help to improve skin dryness.

Poison Ivy

Skin that has been in contact with poison ivy plants may have a skin reaction that is characterized by a rash and blisters. The rash may not appear for several days after contact with the poison ivy plant. The rash can be treated with steroid cream. Steroid cream medications can help to relieve itching and reduce swelling.

Eczema

Eczema is a condition that is characterized by skin that is itchy and inflamed. It is also called atopic dermatitis. It is a long-term condition and typically appears on the arms and behind the knees. Steroid creams can be used in the treatment of eczema. Steroid creams will reduce itching and also reduce inflammation of the affected skin.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a condition that is characterized by white patches on the skin in various places on the body. It is a disorder caused by pigmentation disorder. Hair that grows on skin affected by vitiligo can also turn white. Vitiligo can be treated with steroid creams. Steroid creams can help return pigments to the affected areas of skin, especially in the early stages of vitiligo.

Granuloma Annulare

Granuloma annulare is a long-term condition that is a disease of the skin. It is characterized by rashes that have reddish bumps arranged in a ring or circle. It most often affects young adults and children. The reddish bumps typically appear on the feet, hands or forearms. Granuloma annulare can be treated with steroid creams. Steroid creams help to ease the rash and to accelerate the disappearance of the rash.
