When choosing a diet plan or managing your eating habits, it is important to consider how many calories you should intake each day. Men and women have different metabolic rates and require different caloric intakes.
Basal Metabolic Rate
A man's basal metabolic rate, often abbreviated BMR, is rate at which he burns calories for energy. BMR is quantified in units of calories per day and calculates the number of calories a man would burn in one day, at rest. In other words, if a man stays in bed all day, his BMR would be equal to the number of calories burned in that day. You can find a man's BMR using the following equation.
BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in years )
Minimum Calories
The National Institute of Health and Medline Plus stipulate that a man should eat a minimum of 1,500 calories per day. This number is based on research that studies healthy eating habits and weight management.
Exercise
Men who exercise burn additional calories. A man with a BMR of 2,000 calories, who burns 300 calories through exercise would need to eat 2,300 calories to maintain his current weight. For weight loss, reduce the amount of calories you eat, below what your body burns with BMR and exercise. Cutting 500 calories from your daily caloric allowance will yield weight loss of 1 lb. per week.
